The Roman Empire and Christianity

LivItaly Private Tour Reviews

This walking tour begins and ends at two of Rome's four major basilicas (Santa Maria Maggiore and St. Paul's outside the walls) and includes an exploration and discussion of several intriguing topics: Michelangelo's association with, and the artistic works which he produced for, the Catholic church (sculpture of Moses at the Church of S. Peter in chains) and the role of the Church and the Popes in the development of the visual arts and architecture; the relationship between the early Christians and the government and citizens of the Roman Empire as well as the true story of the persecution of the early Christians (experienced as we visit the Colosseum and the Circus Maximum); and finally, Rome's relationship with other ancient empires and religions throughout history, starting from the time of the Roman Empire up to modern times (visit to the Pyramid).

This tour offers you the opportunity to see and explore places which are somewhat off-the-beaten-tourist track and to experience them in a context which, we hope, will stimulate food for thought and reflection.
