We will, in fact, begin our tour with a visit to the Church of S. Peter in chains where not only Michelangelo's splendid statue of Moses resides but where the chains used for St. Peter's arrest and subsequent crucifixion are held. The rest of our morning will be spent visiting ancient Rome (the Forum and the Colosseum). Lunch will be at one of our favourite trattorias near the Victor Emanuel Monument and we will then continue into the area known in Roman times as the Campus Martius, where you can toss your coin into the Trevi Fountain, marvel at the spectacular Pantheon and admire Bernini's Four Rivers Fountain in Piazza Navona. From there our car will take us to the Borghese Gallery for an enthralling look at original paintings by Caravaggio, Raphael, Dossi and Rubens and the remarkable statues by Bernini and Canova. After a beautiful panoramic view of Rome, as the sun sets, from the Borghese Gardens, we will drop you off at the Spanish Steps for a stroll around the famous shopping areas of the city center or, if you prefer, just take you back to your hotel.
The second day will find us in the southern part of the city as we visit the awesome ruins of the ancient Baths of Caracalla and the Circus Maximum where we can imagine Ben Hur racing in his chariot. After a fun stop at the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) and lunch, we will then make our way to the Vatican where we will guide you through the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel and, of course, St. Peter's Basilica. Our tour concludes at the top of the Mausoleum of Hadrian (known now as Castel Sant'Angelo) where we will toast your visit to this incredible city with a glass of papal wine, as we watch the reflection of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica shimmering on the surface of the Tiber River just below us.
